Curiosities

Before feeding the guineas and dogs this morning, I discovered that Grace had investigated one corner of her new dog bed. This would normally be a time to be frustrated because dog beds are quite expensive but I made her the bed. All I really must do is trim up the foam and patch the fleece. An easy fix.

But why? Why do dogs occasionally turn their beds into chew toys? Some would say boredom. Our dogs are anything but bored. I am convinced it is curiosity! Grace is an active Golden. She’s our little Sporty Spice. She is constantly in motion…digging, leaping, and figuring things out. While the other dogs are dozing peacefully, Grace will be discovering that toads do not wish to be played with or that some sticks hiss and strike. So, when Grace greeted me this morning from her bed with its missing corner chunk with her tail wagging… I knew the truth. Grace was simply investigating the inner workings of her bed.

Who are we to judge? Prior to purchasing a mattress, after considerable bouncing on the displays, we want to see what is inside. The sales person comes out with a chunk of the mattress and explains each layer and its function. We touch the foam and padding in wonder and think, “So that’s why it is so comfy. Now I get it.”

Recently, I visited an upscale pet shop and found a display for a dog bed which featured a cross-section of the mattress. The bed was designed for an elderly dog with joint pain. Another customer was pinching the foam and padding, perhaps thinking, “So that is why…” And where was their dog? At home, faithfully waiting for his/her owner’s return and wondering what will be inside the new dog bed that wasn’t in the old one.

Here is a picture of curious Grace taken when I was in the back of the truck:
