She’s No Chicken

I know what you’re thinking: “Looks like a chicken to me.”
Well, you can just kick that kinda thinking to the curb because Menina isn’t afraid of anything. Not one thing. She fearlessly bogarts each morsel of food, defending it against Buttercup, Lucy, and Sarah Beth (who tower over her like Macy’s Day balloons… only armed with a beak and flapping wings). Yet, she’s a blanced gal.
When she is not gulping down windfall cherry tomatoes, she’s attempting to hatch wooden eggs. Tender and devoted, she happily forgoes nourishment to keep those eggs incubated. She repeatedly nuzzles and turns those Hobby Lobby craft eggs, drapes her wings over the nest protectively, and growls at those who dare approach her nest. Push her too far, and she’ll hop out on the ledge to tell you off.
Menina needed a nest full of her own eggs to hatch. This glaringly obvious fact led us to purchase a little Bantam rooster from the Lee County Flea Market. Josh and I could relate to the overwhelming need to fill that nest. The need to have something worth protecting… Menina’s needs hit a little close too home.
Enter the new man. He’s going to make all of Menina’s dreams come true. Well, when he stops being scared of her.
Perhaps we’ll just call it “a healthy respect” for her.
He’s terrified.
