A River Runs Through It

As important as the here and now may be, a walk in the past is every bit as vital to our health.  This morning, I am remembering the last visit I had with my Aunt Judy, a naturalist living in Alaska.  Judy arranged for a 24 hour layover in Seattle on her way to Alaska from visiting in Virginia.  I picked her up at baggage claim so she could join us for lunch and a walk along the Nisqually River before returning to the airport for the short flight to Ancourage.

The day holds the record for being the most beautiful during my stay in Washington.  The sun finally appeared, the rains stopped, and the grass hadn’t died.  Josh and I couldn’t stand to stay indoors for a single moment and Judy shared our perspective.

Such a great day.  Grace, one of our Goldens, came along and happily nosed around the plants, rocks, and water.  One particular spot really appealed to her.  She rolled about in it making noises that confirmed just how wonderful it felt.  She then galloped excited circles around us with tail up like a flag: pure unadulterated bliss.  And then the odor… Grace had discovered a pile of poo — complete with toilet tissue — and decided to wear it home.

Josh grabbed our darling little girl and hauled her into the freezing waters of the glacier-fed Nisqually.

Poor Grace.  She’d made such a delightful riverside discovery.  So fragrant.  So fresh.

I confess to standing on the shore with Judy — cracking up.

And finally… Josh joined in the laughter.

You shouldn’t even think about living in the country if you can’t laugh at poo.
