Spring in Your Step

We were fortunate enough to spend the heat of the day at a local spring — a spot where one of the underground streams in this area filters up through the depths to form a deep pool. The shear beauty of this place cannot be caught on film, captured in words, or summed up with a sip of the water. This is delicious water, too. I am a water connoisseur, let me tell you. If I only had influence, bottled water companies would be wise to pay me for such reviews.
The spring itself feeds a lovely stream which leads to a natural pool that is lined with stone and roughly the size of a football field. After lunch, the group strayed from the pool and ended up in the ice cold waters of the spring. With its impenetrable depths, dramatic cliff, and sparkling clear water, it made for some memorable fun.
Did I get in? Are you kidding? No way, man. That water was like the melting ice of Narnia and I am not a fan of having my teeth chattering like wind-up toys. No thank you. I took pictures of all the crazy people and squealed like a girl when they “accidentally” splashed me.
So, (plucky thing that I am) I fled to the trail along the stream that leads away from the spring with my friend, Laura, from knitting circle. Streams are a source of endless happiness and I love exploring the bamboo, ferns, mushrooms, and moss that grows in and around the dancing waters as it weaves through the dappled light.
Oh, and this spongy bit o’ heaven should be somehow reproduced to be in every shoe. If I were walking around on this stuff all the time… I’d be a long jump Olympian or something. How could I not? By the way, I borrowed Laura’s leg for this shot for many reasons… namely because she has gee golly gorgeous ones and I secretly hoped you’d think that it belonged to me. There. I said it.
The trail wound down to the deep end of the natural swimming pool which was really more of a lake only with a stone bottom and sides. Which makes it more of a pool. My head hurts. I don’t know what it is but it’s spring-fed and just gorgeous — particularly with my wonderful husband swimming in it. But you already knew I would say that.
What are the nearest springs to your house? I grew up near Seawright Springs, Hot Springs, Warm Springs, Vaucluse Springs, and countless others. Virginia is just oozing with them. Nearly every farmer I know has some area on their land with water bubbling up out if the limestone. And yes… there’s even a Lacey Springs. And don’t think I didn’t hear about it constantly. Several of my uncles even worked as lifeguards at Seawright Springs pool, whose famed water is now bottled and sold through a publicly traded company. The pool is no longer open but the water still flows.
And some congratulations in order from this post: Ann of Velvet Lava Cafe won herself a packet of basil from Seeds of Change. We are all very envious and would like you to grow that basil very quickly and produce a yummy savory dish for all of us to enjoy. She also got two coupons for Earthbound Organics products.
Hmmm… and I am opening this post to questions which I will answer in tomorrow’s post. How about that? Ask away, my friends.
