A Lack of Training Wheels

My favorite moment… bike riding lessons with guinea coops in the background. You bet your sweet bippy that’s country living at its best! Where else can you see such a sight without first paying for a ticket?

Okay, I’m officially back from my month-long vacation and bonding with the kids. Not that the bonding has finished — just that I am trying to ensure my own sanity and blogging really helps. (Well… let’s hope so, anyway.) I’m sure you’ve wondered what on earth we’ve been up to while NOT WATCHING TELEVISION. Oh my… only a million things and all of them joyous in their own right.
Above is our oldest girl with Josh learning how to ride a bike without training wheels. Who doesn’t remember the swift and angry “thwack” of hitting the pavement when first riding our beloved bikes sans training wheels?
Look closely now…. I hadn’t noticed this little feature until I’d loaded the pictures onto the computer and gazed lovingly at such a brave little bike rider and my wonderful husband demonstrating the fine art of using the brakes:
A lack of training wheels but an abundance of chickens. Goodness gracious laws-a-mercy… I love this life.
Want to know more about our chickens? Check out our little nudists: The Buff Orpingtons. New to this zany adventure and trying to figure out how we appeared with kids so suddenly? Our Adoption story may be of some help.
Kill Your TV — A Simple Plan to a Better Life

Nothing against Sponge Bob or the Disney Channel or even awesome TLC shows like 17 and Counting (Who doesn’t love the Duggars?) but one of the very first decisions that we made as new parents was to keep the television turned off. We had no idea if our plan would work but we were going to try!
Admittedly, the first few days were difficult. The kids had all but been raised by the glowing screen of the tube and when they talked about people — nine times out of ten the people were characters on the television shows they frequented. There were even the occasional longing glances cast toward the TV. As the first few hours and days trickled by, the children adjusted to a busier life and now walk right past the TV on their way to the kitchen to help me bake, outside to play with the dogs, the dining room to color and paint, or their rooms to pull out toys or books for free play.
And then an amazing thing began to happen — we started to get to know our kids and they started to get to know themselves. And the discovery? They are really fantastic kids.
Really.
The moral to the story: Kill your TV and bring your kids to life.
