“E aloha ‘ia a pūlama ‘ia kēia ‘āina kapu no nā kau a kau.” was written on a plaque at the entrance to the Waimea Valley Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. It means: “May this sacred land be loved and cherished for all ages.” We went to two of Oahu’s amazing botanical gardens, Waimea and Ho’omaluhia, and I will cherish my photos and memories from both places. Finding authentic Hawaiian restaurants in Hawaii is frustrating work. All the usual methods of finding good eats simply don’t work around here. When asked where the best hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop cafes and bistros are hiding, the locals will usually direct you to the nearest sub shop or Mexican food eatery. Oh, and I really wish this was a joke. I did not fly all the way to Hawaii for Mexican food, y’all. But then, heaven fell from the sky (or rather the sea) and found its way to my plate. As I stepped off the plane and down the ramp toward baggage claim, I pictured my husband greeting me at the metal luggage carousel with his gentle smile and laughing eyes. Instead, he greeted me at the bottom of the ramp with a broad grin, fragrant dendrobium and tuberose lei, and an orchid tied to a clip for my hair. “Aloha, my love,” he said. “I’ve missed you and I am so glad you are here.” Read more
