It’s a Girl! (At Last)

February 9, 2008|Comments (none)

We are just now back from the Lea County Flea Market where we found the man who sold us the hens-that-weren’t and told him the whole story. Turns out that he thought they were hens, too. He said he’d gladly let us exchange them for hens. I hope he remembers who sold him those roosters so he can give them a piece of his mind! Anyway, Josh and I were faced with a decision: either get more Rhode Island Reds or try another breed. Nothing against Rhode Island Reds… but we decided to get Ameraucanas instead. Ameraucanas sell for $15 each instead of $10 each (like the Rhode Island Reds) so we traded the Gabor Sisters for two new gals. lay green and blue eggs which are said to be low in cholesterol. In keeping with my sixties television star inspired naming, I’ve decided to name our new girls after the lead roles in the Patty Duke Show: Patty Lane and Cathy Lane (for those of you who have never seen the show, Patty Duke played both characters). Here they are:

So now I am putting it to you, my wonderful blogging friends: which hen shall be Cathy Lane and which shall be Patty Lane? To better illustrate the different characters, I’ve included the introduction to the Patty Duke Show:

Obviously, the lighter colored hen should be Cathy and the darker Patty since Cathy was a blond and Patty a brunette.

    P.S.: I updated my blog!

Holly totally went where I was going. I agree that Cathy should be the light one and the dark one Patty. Also, Cathy was all sorts of soft and sophisticated and it just reminds me of the pretty color of the lighter one.

Yeah, if you’re going by appearance, I’d probably agree with Holly and Melissa. If you’re going by temperament, though, you’ll just have to wait and see.

I enjoyed the intro to The Patty Duke Show. That was a show I didn’t watch, but I recognized William Schallert because he played (NERD ALERT!) a bureaucrat who gave Kirk a lot of grief on the Star Trek episode “The Trouble with Tribbles.”

I have to admit that I am with the others on this, and normally I do not follow opinions of others. Just the fact that your naming the chickens/hens/farm foul at all is exquisitely twisted. I cant tell you how entertained i am by this.
    huggs,

Going to go ahead and agree with the others on the names. :) My cousin had some chickens years ago, the names were Peanutbutter, Jelly, Hershey, Kiss, and there were two more but I can’t remember what he’d named that pair. It was awfully cute though. :)

I hope your week’s off to a good start!

I agree with Landon, looks or temperament? By looks it goes with the majority. I really love that your naming them after old shows. I really am excited that our friendly farm animal seller made the situation right.

Well, I am delighted that so many of you agreed with each other about the names. I have finally named the yellow chick: Buttercup. Buttercup is named after Robin Wright Penn’s character in The Princess Bride. Now what shall we name the other chicks? We can’t tell any of them apart… so I need a nice name that works with that kept in mind. Example: the Bettys. You get it. Please tell me what you think! Lovely to hear from all of you!

I agree with the others. Thanks for the flashback of the Patty Duke show. I used to watch the reruns many, many moons ago. Loved them! Glad to hear the man didn’t know about the roosters and that you got the types that you wanted.
