Money for Nothing and the Chicks for Free?

Originally we planned to go to the Lee County Flea Market on Saturday but the weather failed to cooperate. This meant that Nancy and Paul were on the road when Tia Julie, Amber, Heather, Josh, and I left for the market today. We weren’t even sure that anyone would have booths set up since it was so bitterly cold but it was worth a shot. We arrived to find a handful of booths and a man selling chickens, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, and game birds. What luck! He just happened to have with him three lovely Rhode Island Reds (brown egg layers) which we have named Zsa Zsa, Eva, and Magda (after the Gabor sisters). The man was very nice. Tia Julie and I couldn’t stop looking at this little pair of bantams. They were precious! The man selling them took them out of the cage and held them for us to see. Both birds snuggled up against the man’s coat and were obviously quite used to being handled. Tia Julie asked Josh if she could buy them so that when Tio Raul came to visit, we would have cuddly & beautiful birds for him to bond with. Josh happily agreed. Tio Raul will name the darling bantams (pictured at the top of the page) soon. We are confident that he will pick names to match their gentle nature as he is quite good with that sort of thing!
Here are two of our Gabor sisters in the coop:

Chickens are not for the casual investor in these parts! The Rhode Island Reds were $10 each and the bantams were considerably more than that! But that’s the going rate and these were the best looking birds we’ve seen yet. They are plump, well-feathered, brightly colored, and healthy looking. It was also very nice to see that they had been handled from chicks and were not fearful of us. In fact, they enjoy company! This evening, after we said goodbye to Tia Julie and Amber (who we adore), Josh and I went out to check on the birds. I held the tiny bantam hen in my arms like a baby and she nestled into my fleece jacket like she’d been there her whole life. I just can’t tell you how that made us feel… to be holding our own chickens on our own property in front of the chicken coop which we built with our own hands.

Congratulations on your new purchases! It looks like the chickens are coming home to roost. They remind me of my favorite Rhode Island Red, Foghorn Leghorn! “Theah’s somethin’, I say, theah’s somethin’ goin’ on around heah that just don’t add up…” I loved your choices of names. I had forgotten about Magda… That was quite a trip down memory lane, not only the opening of Green Acres, but those vintage commercials! Wow. Are you old enough to remember the Grape Nuts commercials with Ewell Gibbons?
I LOVE vintage commercials! I used to watch Nick at Nite and loved when they would throw in some of the classic commercials. Wish you were here, Landon. I can just picture you holding one of those sweet bantams!
Well, first of all, I’m so glad I’ve been given the opportunity to pick the names for the bantams, since I was not able to be present when they were picked; and after so much thought into that process, we came up with the following:
- Casanova for the male, since he spends all his time surrounded by 4 gorgeous chicks.
and
- Menina for the female; (Menina is “little girl” in Portuguese) and it fits perfect for her since she’s pettite and absolutely a sweet little chick.
Well, ok, you all have a great time cuddling the new babies; hopefully I can get to do the same soon
Hello Tio Raul! We LOVE the names you picked! Casanova and Menina could not have been better named! I can’t wait to see you hold them. Both will cuddle up in your arms and are very gentle. Menina is such a love! I just know that you two will bond. Hope to see you soon. We missed you last weekend. Next time you come, we’ll be sure to play Phase 10 — I think you would love it! Lots of love!!!
This BLOG keeps me in stitches and like Landon often has me travel down memory lane. I had forgotten about my love for watching Green Acres, oh the laughs I enjoyed watching it. After seeing this “in honor of the Gabor sisters” and hearing me laugh out loud at it, my wonderful husband went on-line and found a set of the full 3 seasons of Green Acres on DVD. I will be anxiously awaiting their delivery.
Three seasons of Green Acres!!!! That is fabulous!! Way to go, Raul! Tia Julie — I am so glad that you like our blog. Your comments make the blog fun and special. Know that you have contributed a great deal to make this virtual farm a reality. You are truly a blessing!
