She’s No Chicken

I know what you’re thinking: “Looks like a chicken to me.”

Well, you can just kick that kinda thinking to the curb because Menina isn’t afraid of anything.  Not one thing.  She fearlessly bogarts each morsel of food, defending it against Buttercup, Lucy, and Sarah Beth (who tower over her like Macy’s Day balloons… only armed with a beak and flapping wings).  Yet, she’s a blanced gal.

When she is not gulping down windfall cherry tomatoes, she’s attempting to hatch wooden eggs.  Tender and devoted, she happily forgoes nourishment to keep those eggs incubated.  She repeatedly nuzzles and turns those Hobby Lobby craft eggs, drapes her wings over the nest protectively, and growls at those who dare approach her nest.  Push her too far, and she’ll hop out on the ledge to tell you off.

Menina needed a nest full of her own eggs to hatch.  This glaringly obvious fact led us to purchase a little Bantam rooster from the Lee County Flea Market.  Josh and I could relate to the overwhelming need to fill that nest.  The need to have something worth protecting…  Menina’s needs hit a little close too home.

Enter the new man.  He’s going to make all of Menina’s dreams come true.  Well, when he stops being scared of her.

Perhaps we’ll just call it “a healthy respect” for her.

He’s terrified.

Hope she likes redheads! It is sad when they fixate on an inanimate object - funny but in a sad way (said she trying not to laugh about a chicken obsessing over wooden eggs). The Lord has a wonderful sense of humor - He made US and gave us the animals so we wouldn’t notice how goofy people all are!
Looking forward to the hatch of the banties!

I used to sing my kids a little song that tells the story of those two birds of yours.

    “We had some chickens,
    no eggs would they lay.
    -repeat-
    My wife said “Honey,
    this isn’t funny.
    We’re losing money.
    Why won’t they lay?”
    Then one day a rooster
    came into our yard,
    and caught those chickens
    right off of their gaurd.

(sing much louder & faster now, clapping along)
    They’re laying eggs now
    just like they use ter
    ever since that rooster
    came into our yard.
    -repeat last verse_

I think I learned this silly little song back in 6th grade at outdoor school. Or maybe 4-H camp…

Lacy: Cool story, a brave chicken, I think the call that an oxymoron. I do hope the new guy gets braver.

I hope he has a lot of courage and persistence!

I have three OEG bantams (all girls) and it would take a confident (or foolish) roo to take them on. They are one of my favourite breeds and the eggs are so cute, even if they are sometimes hard to collect as the girls will hiss at me like a cat and peck me (Ouch!!!) when they get broody and decide to sit on their eggs.

I feel her pain! I have this effect on men sometimes also! Hope they get to know one another and get along. Nothing wrong with a strong female. HEHE!

Hi Lacy! *wave* Long time, no talk, I know… I’ve been super busy - and, we were away on vacation for three weeks - and I’m sorry I haven’t been here before now. :(

Your site looks absolutely fantastic, my friend! Very professional, very stylish! *thumbsup* You really have been busy here, haven’t you? :)

On a side note, I just posted an update at my Wordpress site, if you’re at all interested… :)

Take care of yourself, dear lady. I’ll be coming by more often, now that I’m home and somewhat on track again… *hug*

**smiling…leave it to you Dear Lacy….to name your chickens! I truly love mine too, but afraid to name anything, as it seems that once I do…well, you know…

He’ll come around. Deep down all men want a self assured, confident woman who isn’t afraid to stand up for herself. :o)

    She’s a cutie!
I was just looking back at some of your posts on Grit???
Where and what do you buy to scent your laundry detergent? I made the liquid stuff, same idea as what you did. I added essence oil 1/2 oz. but it was $5 so the whole purpose of making to save $ was kind of defeated. Also do you have your oatmeal soap recipe anywhere’s on your blog? I am interested in starting to make soap as I want to do as some x-mas presents this year so I thought that I best be experimenting before December.

She’s so pretty! Hehe :) He seems like a smart man. Hope he plays his cards right ;)

This reminds me of when Aunt Suzanne tried to get her English springer spaniel Mrs. Thatcher to have a family. Bad idea. The “Iron Lady” wasn’t at all interested. Her would-be suitor’s advances were met with rather hard bites. Eventually Suzanne gave up. I hope you have better luck with Menina and…what’s the little fella’s name?

G’morning, Lacy! :) I hope you have a great day and a great week ahead, my friend; I imagine you and Josh are probably gearing up for fall harvesting soon, eh? :) It’s going to be interesting to see what new and exciting recipes you come up with that you’re willing to share; some of the dishes you’ve made are positively mouth-watering… :D

Anyway, I wanted to stop in and say hi, so you don’t think I’ve forgotten about you. I know, I know: I haven’t been very good, lately, about visiting… :( I’m trying to smarten up about that - really, I am! :|

Well, have a great day, my friend. Hope to hear from you again soon! :) *hug*

LACY! *hug* Thanks so much for your comment about my mom, and about being there for me. That really touched my heart, you know; it sometimes feels like I’m kinda by myself in things, so reading your words really made a difference in my life. Thankyou, dear lady……

I hope you have a great week, Lacy… *hug*

What a chick! Any offspring jet?

  24. Suzi on September 12th, 2008 11:45 pm

LOL!!! Way to go girl!!! They are SOOOOOO adorable, any chance of the make??

We have several different types of chickens, and one called ‘MopTop’ a beautiful chicken, rescued from an unkind family because she was ‘always’ broody. these unkind people kept dunking her bottom in a bucket of water, it is supposed to get them off the nest.( you don’t want to hear what I told them a few @@!!*** and more)

Well, seeing as NON of our chickens were ever broody, I jumped at the chance of at least one broody mare!!

So home with me she came and fought every chicken in sight and spent her first season with us running around the paddock, NO sitting on eggs for this young lady!!

But, the next season, she gladly sat on two sets of eggs and now we have a beautiful clutch of gorgeous hens!! So hang in there the babies will come, you might have to help with raising the first batch of young ones, but she will get the hang of it.
