Meet Sydney and Boston, our brand new baby goats. These were not impulse buys — they were born right here in our very own goat shed. Keep in mind that the pictures just do not do them justice. They are absolutely beautiful.
Do not watch the above video if you are a bit squeamish. There is some blood and some goo that is reminiscent of the psychomagnotheric slime seen in those Ghostbusters movies from the eighties. And yes, I am a total dork and use words like “psychomagnotheric slime” and also “ectoplasm” because I have probably seen Ghostbusters fifty times.
So, again… just in case you got distracted by Ghostbusters references… the video shows a live birth. You have been warned.
Meet Boston! Boston, a buckling, was the first born of the twins. Apple loved him the very moment I set him down on the towel in front of her. In fact, I’m not even sure she felt the contractions which produced her baby girl.
Meet Sydney! Isn’t she gorgeous? She has loads of personality and was the first of the twins to nurse. Of the two babies, her coat is the softest and she is the most likely to curl up on my lap to sleep. Would you look at those eyes and those lashes? Her eyes are like chlorine pools and those silvery lashes steal my breath away.
I’ve spent an embarrassing number of hours seated criss-cross-applesauce in the straw bedding with Apple and the kids.
Perhaps my favorite moments come when the babies are sleeping and I get to watch them take deep slow breaths while scratching Apple behind her ears. I love just hanging out with Apple and being so close to her babies. I’m honored that she’s so willing to share them with me, that she trusts me to touch them, and that we can simply watch them together in a peaceful contented silence.
More to come…
