50 Minutes of Fame: Discussing Home Education on TV

In April, the Hawaii Public Broadcasting Station contacted me to be a guest on their program, “Insights.” I joined three others to discuss home education and it was so much fun! I thought I would share the video.

I confess: the freeze-frame makes me look pretty smug. I wasn’t smug at all because I was too busy being scared out of my mind! All went well though and I am proud to have brought current statistics on how well homeschool students perform on SATS and also that I was able to address school start-times. Also mentioned: Oahu Homeschool Co-Op, the homeschool group I founded and coordinate. Oahu Homeschool Co-Op currently has over two hundred members and counting. Our co-op follows The EIC Model, mimics Finnish school curricula, and is dedicated to the study of natural sciences in a natural setting. We hope to nurture in our a children a lifelong love of learning, encourage critical thinking, and instill a sense of stewardship for the environment.  There was so much more I could have said, but I felt the panel represented our home education community quite well. My dear friends, Janet, Jennifer, and Melissa joined me and took photos. Check them out below!

Toward the very end, I mention my friend and mentor, Dawn. Dawn lives in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) and I have followed her blog, Colours of Dawn, faithfully for many years. She and her husband visited our family in Hawaii a few months ago and we visited them on our way to Alaska several years ago. Dawn blogged about homeschooling while educating her children and still writes columns about parenting & home education. She’s a remarkable woman and truly inspiring home educator.

I also want to link to an essay by Carol Black, “On the Wilderness of Children,” which sums up all I have ever wanted to say about home education and public schools. While it’s usually wise to avoid the comment section on these sorts of posts, I found the comment section to be a colorful and enlightened area of discussion which was completely worth reading. Carol’s other essays are spot-on (in my opinion and obviously her opinion, too) about unschooling, global economics, and a myriad of other topics.
