Just a Garden Away from Happiness

Having just returned from the land of cement and exhaust (a.k.a. Los Angeles, California), I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see all that green lush behind the chicken coop. Actually, it’s just really grand to see some grass under foot, never mind the chickens and cheerful barn red coop. The backyard was my very first stop upon arrival. I all but fell out of the passenger seat in my rush to see the garden.
Could I just point out that one of the coolest things about organic gardening is that if you feel like it (and I REALLY felt like it), you can eat the produce right off the vine without washing it first? Not that I make a habit of such things. Nope. **whistling and rolling eyes upward innocently** Do note that we are drowning in tomatoes over here. Please send help.
Ahh yes… far better than any garden gnome or motion-activated infrared contraption, my trusty chickens guarded my veggie patch with such skill! Would you look at that face? She’s plotting her next combat mission. Bugs beware. Having mastered air assault and ground soldiering, the only thing left is sniper school. Do you think they would take her?

Gosh, it’s good to be home. Would you look at those salmonella-free tomatoes? I don’t think I got to eat a tomato the entire time I was on the west coast. It’s just wrong to not be able to eat tomatoes in summer. That’s like saying that you can’t have fireworks on the Fourth of July. Wrong, I tell you.
Don’t they look like old fashioned Christmas lights? Seriously. Did I mention that it was good to be home?

Please leave us a comment. We love reading them and feel that they are the best part of the site. Thank you!

Bummer, I can’t see the chilis!
You can send all the tomatoes down here you want. I’ll dry them.
I got some tomatoes out of our garden and I hope we get a lot more next year.
Good to have you back. Who took care of your farm while you were gone? No baby chicks or any other little surprises?
Oooo tomatoes! Very nice Lacy. Too bad the chili peppers photo didn’t show up.
I also harvested some cherry tomatoes yesterday, just 4 though.
BTW, I just posted some new photos on my blog. Please stop by when you have a chance.
Have a great day!
I’m sure that Will would be more than delighted to relieve you of some of that crop of cherry tomatoes. Given the choice between those and candy, he would eat those 9 times out of 10.
I would be more than happy to relieve you of a green tomato or two. I dust mine with seasoned cornmeal and fresh grated parmesan, fry them up crispycrusty, and serve them with a dollop of sweet onion relish on top. Mmm mmm.
My sister likes them with ranch dressing, but to me ranch dressing is like ketchup — it makes anything you put it on just taste like ranch dressing. Of course, not to say that ketchup makes things taste like ranch dressing. That would be silly.
Those tomatoes look soooooooooo good, I wish we were close enough to help you eat them. In the summer while growing up tomatoes were a main food item for us. We purchased them from a man down the road, big baskets for $1 each. I don’t know if that was his regular rate or a special just for us. I can still eat them easily just like apples or sliced and on bread with mayo and a sprinkle of salt. YUM, YUM, YUM only fresh home garden grown will do!
Another favorite that my grandmother used to do. Is pole beans cooked with small potatoes and onions right out of her garden. Oh, how I miss her.
Welcome home! I love the website, very nice. I’m with you on the produce… Sometimes I can’t help but nibble on the little grape tomatoes while I’m playing around outside :-). There’s nothing like the taste of a warm summer tomato right off the vine.
I always look at my garden too when I first arrive home!! There is something so homey about it!!
What are you all making with your tomatoes?
Welcome home. LA sux. Last time I went there I threw up in the car, simply from the stress of being in the city. OK, too much information, but that’s how much I hated SoCal, LA especially!
And the 2nd picture. What are those? Certainly can’t be tomatoes, because mine are ALL GREEN!!!! So SURELY you don’t have any of those plump, red babies.
Tomatoes fresh from the vine! Yum!
I love visiting cities but I always need to get back to the green trees and fresh air….
Just found your blog but Im tellin’ you I too have tomato envy. Out here in Oregon the weather is iffy and we never know if we will be faced with the dreaded “year of the green tomato”. It just doesnt get warm enough some times to ripen the stuff.’
I agree about organic gardening. I do the same. Aint nothin’ like fruit from the vine, now is there?
I would glad.y take some of those tomatoes off your hands. I love to just pick and eat.
We are up to our eyeballs in tomatoes also! Thats a good thing though. Lots of tomatoes to put up for the winter.
Welcome Home! I’ve missed you! Oh, your garden has blessed you with a bounty for your return! Poor garden of mine got invaded with a yet-to-be-determined predator…(a few are in the freezer for a visit to the county extension agent to determine their genetics). Like your new site too!
Your garden looks great and you have a good combat partner there. It has been rather cool here on and off but I did see some tomatoes today.
You have a very nice blog
Marie from Norway.
Hi Lacy, I finally posted a real post again.
I’d like some of those tomatoes. I lost most of my crop this year to hail. I am getting close to some yellow pear tomatoes and I do have at least 3 large green tomatoes. I’m just waiting for them to ripen before the squirrels get them.
I’m with you, green is so pretty! Of course, Nebraska in August starts to look rather like LA. Brown here and there. For now it’s still nice, but give it a few weeks.
Hi Lacy, We’ve been missing you! Your new site is beautiful, reminds me of Pioneer Woman’s set up. How do you find your most recent posts? I was able to find this through your old link but not your new.
Take care, Kim
Lacy: Wonderful looking tomatoes, I eat the cherry tomatoes right off the vine and love them. It so great to grow your own vegetables.
