Sweet Escape

September 1, 2008|Comments (25)

I could just get lost in that little curl.  That sweet plant tendril that threatens to send me into fits of coos and generally disgusting nonesense spoken in a high-pitched Stepford -Wife-to-her-husband sort of voice.  Sickening, really.

Would you wook at dat dawling wittle viney-whiney?

Sorry.  Let’s move on, shall we?

As important as vegetable gardening is for our household (and it is vital), the puddle fountain and surrounding hostas, gardenia bushes, roses, and other flowers are what keeps us together.  We treasure our mornings and evenings on the porch with the trickle of water, the hum of bumblebees, whir of hummingbirds, and the gentle thump of a happy Golden Retriever tail.

While I am certainly capable of thrilling to the blush on a new tomato or the curl of a cucumber vine, I need the flowers and water to truly enjoy the results of our (and I use “our” in the very loosest sense because Josh did dig that pond by shovelful at a time) labors.  When I look at the vegetable garden, my brain hits the busy button and suddenly I’m ticking off a long list of things that need to be done.  The flowers… well, things get a bit fuzzy.  I can zone for a while when I look at them.

I can grab my camera and just go wild.  Josh says this is when I do my best work (photography-wise).  I tend to agree.  Not that I claim to be very talented and you sure won’t find any Photoshop tutorials on here.  Unless a photo needs to be turned into an ad on my sidebar… I run far from any retouching and even then I keep it to a minimum.  I like my photos to have some flaws otherwise no one would believe that I took them.  No one who knows me anyway.

Growing up, I didn’t watch a lot of television but I did have access to a VCR and would watch The Secret Garden over and over again.  The scene where the garden blooms and everything comes to life (including the characters) still dwells in my memory as being the ideal.  The interplay of light and dark, the time elapse photos of clouds rolling and flowers emerging all set to beautiful music: the dream garden.

One must draw inspiration from something.  We must have beauty around us.  What better therapy than to spend some time in the poppy blooms… like diving into a Georgia O’Keefe painting only soft, fragrant, and living.

Where do you escape to?

    Escape? What is this “escape”?

Kidding, of course. There’s just not a lot of escaping these days.

For a big escape, we head to the hundred acre wood. There are places on that property where you can see no signs of human life. No power lines or poles or anything.

For a little escape, I go out in the backyard and let my chickens run around while I read. I only have a few flowers, but the giant pecan trees offer much needed shade from the sizzling Texas heat.

    Lovely pictures, by the way.

Such pretty pitures, pretty flowers. I especially like the rose. Wow!

  3. Rosa on September 1st, 2008 8:42 am

What a wonderful garden! I’d love to have one like that!

    Cheers,

    Rosa

Sounds like a perfect escape for me! I agree with all of the above. Beautiful photos! I could sit among my plants and little set-ups outside for hours and just watch nature at work.

Great timing! I made a new blog header yesterday. As I put pictures together, I was thinking about this very thing. The flowers don’t often make it onto the blog, because they’re not usually what I’m working on. But they represent that lovely peace and enjoyment in the midst of working on the to-do list.

BTW, the rose picture is lovely!

The way you described that little bubbling pond sounds like a very peaceful place to contemplate life.

I talk to my flowers all the time, in the same sweet voice that I talk to my dogs in, that makes my husband roll his eyes :-).

    They are lovely.

My escape is to site out in the yard and watch…. the garden grow, the flowers bloom, the chickens play, the sugar being the guard, my sweetie taking care of our little paradise!

Awesome pictures! That rose is so, so pretty. Your flowers are beautiful. :)

  12. CC on September 1st, 2008 9:39 pm

Please. come. to. my. home. and. garden.

    Everything. is. dead. or. dying.

  13. Applie on September 2nd, 2008 6:43 am

Well, I don’t have a garden to escape to and if I did, the kids would find me anyways. Then they’d pick all the flowers and say, “Look at what I picked for you!”

Don’t go to CC’s house. She’ll only want you to plant sissy pink flowers. She really need bold red ones. :-)

Lacy: What great captures of the garden and the flowers.

  15. Kath on September 2nd, 2008 8:26 am

    Love the “real” photos!!

We escape to WY to the wide opened landscape and then we escape home to be “home”. Confusing? Yep we are!!!! LOL

  16. Fishing Guy on September 3rd, 2008 7:51 am

Lacy: To answer your where do I go to escape, why to the lake. The lake waters give me insulation from people and allows me to carry out my passion.

Escape, yes what a wonderful thing to do away from the busyiness of LIFE. I love sitting in a swing out in nature or beside a running creek or water fall.

Lacy-just a beautiful post!! My escape-music! Bet you could’ve guessed that one.

  19. Ann on September 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm

LOVE that rose - one of my favorite colors you got goin’ there, young lass!

Where do I escape? Wow. AH! Okay - hiking on the mountain, watching a tree in the wind, the rain if it EVER gets here, the smell of my dogs’ necks, the hug of my hubby. :)

Oh I so support you in the love of the little curl! It just inspires babytalk! Besides when you talk like that to the plants it helps them grow. It adds to their self esteem and you get more cucumbers…I think. ahem

  21. Barb on September 4th, 2008 12:47 am

Oh Lacy, the pictures are beautiful! Eveything about them, reflects your tender loving heart!!!
I escape kind of like you do. My flowers & veggies…I love my morning coffee sitting outside, with the sun beaming on my labors. Some say I’,m obsessive about my yard & gardens & animals…they just haven’t been as blessed as me!
    Have a great week Lacy!

What do you mean you are not a photographer?! Those pictures are gorgeous. I’m jealous, I’d love to have the rose(my favorite color of rose, and those poppies) I can imagine where I’d find a place to hang the pictures I took of them if I had them.

  24. CrossView on September 5th, 2008 9:43 am

I’m getting closer to packing my suitcases! =P

Seriously, I love to just sit outside and watch. There’s never a dull moment in the woods!

I have a Secret Garden that is my escape. It sits on the hillside behind our house and in the summer isn’t visible behind those tall lilac bushes. Our secret garden is full of daisies, poppies, lilac’s, hydranga’s, current bushes, maple and pine tree’s and more. It’s accessed by a little rock walkway that’s hard to see meandering behind more large clusters of daisies. We have a couple of adirondack chairs back there and it’s the perfect place to unwind, with a view of the bay.
