Mortal Combat… Simple Living’s Signature Moves

“Scorpion needed to get across the creek and asked the frog for a ride. Frog says, “I can’t trust you, you’re a scorpion.” Scorpion says, “Sure you can.” Hops on the frog’s back. Midway across, the scorpion stings the frog. Frog looks at him. “Why would you do that? Now we’re both gonna die.” Scorpion says…”I can’t help it. I’m a scorpion.”

Here in the predacious bug capital of the South, we enjoy regular visits from stinging, biting, and poisonous critters of all shapes and sizes.  Carnivorous arthropods do not top my list as welcomed guests, call me crazy.  Josh knows of my intense dislike of death on six or eight legs so he brings them to me regularly in glass bottles which could easily be knocked over or broken while I peer into their depths to witness a very angry fanged or stingered beast.  I hug my Epi-Pen like the only oar on a lifeboat.

And to think that I would have missed out on this had we been a normal subdivision-dwelling family.  This little friendly fellow occupied our garage.  Our attached garage.

*cringe*

In Greek mythology, the scorpion is conjured by the gods to hound and punish Orion. It is also said that when Perseus slew Medusa, the blood that leaked out of her severed neck turned into scorpions and snakes as it hit the ground.  I just thought you’d like to know.

Whoever said that the simple life wasn’t edgy and dangerous, never met my Ranger husband who catches snakes and brings me scorpions and black widows.

Mine brings us black widows which we promptly put in alcohol to study. Don’t tell PETA. =P

But that things you posted is too much for me!

Eeeekkk! It looks really nice, but I don’t know if I’d like that crawling around my place…

    Cheers,

    Rosa

Now see, this is one of the things about moving to the country that unnerves me. I really don’t like creepy crawlies. Especially ones that sting.

    I’m fine with stuff as long as it can’t kill you, or has family members that can kill you. He qualifies as something I am not fine with. :{

My daughter is a huge nature lover and she always caught all kinds of critters. She found a scorpion once, too. She kept it for several weeks in an aquarium.

What neat pictures these are of the scorpion! I’ve not seen many where I live now (knock on wood) but in one place I lived in LA they got in the house all the time. I was stung several times. I hated those scorpions and whenever we saw one me and my 2 kids would both start screaming. lol. Once I even found a dead one in my bed!

My neice has one in a glass jar right now also. Her poinsonous pet is a white scorpion from Wyoming. I prefer them outside. And far from me….

You are now my hero, quoting CSI in your blog!!!!! Josh is silly, tell him if he wants to show you bugs make sure they are dead first!!!! Good luck this week call me when you can!!

We have scorpions here too! I’d rather have the creepy crawlies than mice anyday!!

In our old house, we had them inside all the time. At one point we found two on my son’s ceiling, but they were dead. My husband stepped on one and it really burned. It was an idd-biddy one too. eeek.

We get visits from the same nasty beasties - the sting is similar to an electric shock - that keeps on shocking for a while. None in US are deadly - well none that are native - there are all kinds of goofy people bringing in more stuff that we don’t need here.
My DH is more edgy about spiders than I am - he had the excitement of a brown recluse bite a few years ago - 10 days in the hospital were NOT the best time of his life. Ah - what perfect topic for me to pursue just before climbing into the shower and then to bed (note to self - check the covers before climbing into bed).

My sign is Scorpio and I in turn find them fascinating creatures. Not saying that I would want my hubby with the nice pipes to bring me one though! I could watch them from a distance with a lot of protective gear!

Lacy: Nicely shown and loved the reflective shots. I wouldn’t handle them.

Here in Arizona, we call these our ROOM MATES!!!! ;)

  19. Barb on September 4th, 2008 12:52 am

Oooo…I didn’t know you had those critters there??!! While in AZ, they were my most dreaded of ALL that live there! When we moved back here, the uhaul loaded… set off bombs! Was NOT about to bring any to WA ! My luck, they would survive and multiply!

Yes, definitely one of my top five reasons to live in the North. Too damn cold for any bugs/spiders/critters, etc.

When we lived in Texas I was APPALLED by the amount of creepy crawly things. I hate them!
