Putting the Garden to Bed

December 11, 2007|Comments (none)

As the leaves fall (even in the mild Georgia winter), it is a great time to burn brush and clean out the woods in our front yard. We hope to have it cleared by spring so we can fence it and have goats. Josh took a break from the yard to put the garden to bed. He hauled the compost bin out to the raised beds and spread it over the soil. He then got out our trusty cultivator and went to work. I took pictures and brought him sweet tea. Putting the garden to bed fills me with hope for the spring. Already I am planning our little garden and deciding what I want to grow: tomatoes, peppers, zucchini (of course) but how about leeks or something exotic? I am very excited. I pulled out my Gardening in Georgia book and went to town looking at the pictures of other people’s gardens. Oh, I wish we could plant a HUGE garden! The soil here is so hard! It is solid clay. We were forced to build raised beds and fill them with top soil just so we could plant. Josh finished the day by burning the brush he cut out of the front yard. The fire was quite smokey because of all the green vines. Grace and Dustin sat with us and scrambled to eat the ice cubes we dropped for them. It was a pleasant evening… steak, parmeasan corn on the cob, and zucchini for dinner. I made up Friendship bread for snacks and dessert.
