Simple Gal to City Gal? Ha! Part 1

LA

See all that green at the bottom of the picture?  It’s a lie.  I know.  I was just there and the only green that I saw from Figueroa Street in L.A. was the gum I stepped in the very first day.  I was there (just in case you are new to this blog and didn’t already know) to work in a trade show selling the most gorgeous hand-tuned, high end, Made in the USA wind chimes that you have ever seen.

Corinthian Bells

With outdoor living spaces being all the rage, selling these fantastic chimes is relatively easy to do.  They sell themselves, really.   Of course, the irony of selling chimes as the ideal addition to any garden or porch (and in colors to compliment nature) in cement-laden Los Angeles was not lost on me.  Nope.  Of course, I wasn’t actually selling them to L.A. but rather the shops in the surrounding areas which, I’m told, contain lovely homes with manicured lawns.  I hope to see those one day.  The only houses I saw came straight out of the Flintstones.

Santa Monica Pier

Cheryl, my coworker (who I adore), suggested that we take the bus to the Santa Monica Pier after setting up our booth at the show.  This proved to be the best day of the entire trip.  We had a truly wonderful time walking the beach, enjoying the Pacific breeze, and eating a California cobb salad with grilled shrimp at Bubba Gump’s (which is on the pier and just about as out of place as we were).  While sipping lemonade and looking out at the beach, we declared that we would find a park while staying in L.A.  There had to be green grass somewhere.

Enter Pershing Square.  As Virginia natives, we are a spoiled lot.  In Virginia, you are never more than a few minutes away from a park of some variety.  They are everywhere and after a while we just take them for granted.   Sort of like the historical markers that are every twenty-five feet along historic route 11 — no Virginian stops at those things — we don’t even see them any longer.  Back to the parks.  We asked the locals where the nearest park was located after the first day of the trade show and they directed us to Pershing Square.  For the record, parks should have grass, trees, wildlife, bike trails, rock formations, views, etc.  Unless their designer had them confused with a car park in which case they look very much like Pershing Square.  Pershing Square is an expanse of cement with a spattering of homeless people, drug seekers, and the occasional tree.  Cheryl and I fled.

Stay tuned for more big city adventures of your very own simple living gal.

Hey, sorry to hear about the disappointing park. We have many here in Washington too. Rarely a day goes by that I’m not walking my dog at one park or another.

Love the new banner up top–well done!
