Until we moved to Hawaii, I’d only snorkeled a few times and most of those experiences happened when we visited Hawaii in 2009. I can still remember the first time I snorkeled alongside a sea turtle and the magic of seeing one up close. Now that we have a GoPro, I can share our snorkeling experiences with you!
A few months ago, I acquired a boating license so that I could rent boats and pontoons from the marian on the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe. The sandbar is a very large and best seen during low tide. It’s a fairly straight shot from the marina though it requires some careful dodging of reefs which aren’t marked and are just below the surface. As we are big fans of coral reefs, my husband stations himself at the front of the boat to watch for them so that I don’t accidentally steer the boat too close to them. The views from Kaneohe Bay are some of the best views of Oahu, in my opinion. I absolutely love the trip to and from the sandbar.
Once arriving at the sandbar, we play frisbee, float around in the shallow water, and then take turns snorkeling along the reefs where all manner of colorful and exciting sea life may be seen. My favorite, of course, are the sea turtles. I think I could swim with sea turtles every single day of my life and never get bored of it. I mean that, too. They are truly remarkable creatures and surprisingly friendly. I’ve had them swim right up to me and then just hang out.
I hope you enjoyed the video. More to come!
